BQ294502: protection combination set-up

Part Number: BQ294502
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76920, BQ78350, BQ7718, BQ77905

Hi there:

We'd like to set-up a battery protection set for customer's 3-series application.

The required protection include: Over-discharged current protection, over Temp protection for charge/discharge & over voltage protection (2nd level with fuse), 2nd level over-current protection.

Would you help us to advice the suitable solution for customer?

B&R

  • Hi Kay,

As a recap on the solution you are looking for is this going to be standalone protection or will you also be including a monitor?

I will shorten the protections you are asking for into acronyms:
    - Over-discharged current protection (OCD)
    - over Temp protection for charge/discharge (OT in general or OT-D & OT-C for individual protections)
    - over voltage protection (2nd level with fuse) - 2nd level protection
    - 2nd level over-current protection (SCD perhaps for short circuit protection)

You can technically slice this type of solution like this:

    Sol #1:
    - bq76920: takes care of technically all your protection but you will need an MCU or the companion bq78350. With a monitor solution you can technically have your 1st. level of protection be done by the MCU then your 920 can take care of the 2nd level.
    - bq7718: this will take care of your 2nd level of OVP which will take care of blowing a fuse.

Sol #2: Assuming you want only protection as your solution
    - bq77905 can work for your solution. Look at the datasheet to see if the released version can work for the application as these are not field programmable.
    - Adding a bq7718 for fuse blowing will still be the choice here

    See if this helps.

    Thanks
