BQ25895: Need to monitor thermo of two parallel batteries within close but different location

Part Number: BQ25895
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24190,

Hi
I have a need for charging of two parallel Li-ion batteries but separated physically due to our packaging space limitation , now I am thinking to change bq25895 which has only one Thermistor input with bq24190 with two Thermistor inputs, this way I could monitor temperature of these two parallel batteries separate into cavities. Spec wise bq25895 and bq24190 seem alike and packages look interchangeable except one pin-12 which I am not going to use, and Pin-24 which I am using external USB switch. Any other suggestion for monitoring these two Thermistors or ant other part suggestion. Again currently I was planning to use bq25895.

Thank you......Reza

  • Hello Reza,

If you need to monitor two separate thermistors, the bq24190 is a good alternative. Like you mentioned, these parts are pin to pin compatible for the most part with the exception of pins 12 and 24. Since the bq24190 doesn't have a DSEL pin, the host needs to control the USB switch once D+/D- detection is done on the charger; host should wait at least 1 sec after plug-in to switch the mux.

Can you please elaborate on the design criteria used to pick the bq25895 initially? Do you plan on using OTG in your application?
  • Hi Fernando,

We have no plan to use OTG in our application and the criteria I had to chose were basically to have charging capability of greater than 2-3 amps and having discharging of greater than 3Amps, and having battery negotiation and ESD and higher voltages were plus. Then we could not have battery pack in one location and ended up having parallel batteries in separate compartment with each having separate thermistor.

    Thank you.........Reza Rafi
