LM78M: LM78M15

Part Number: LM78M

Hello,

I am using LM78M15 for one my circuit to convert the 24V DC input to 15V regulated output. As per datasheet the maximum input voltage is 35V.

My question is if the input voltage goes beyond 35V for a sec will the output voltage still regulate to 15V or is there any chances that the output voltage exceeds 15V?

Since I am asking this question is I am using this 15V to external encoder interface with 18V TVS protection(1500W). The TVS I am using is failing with short circuit mode and PCB tracks are damaging. The failure of TVS is observed frequently.

  • Hi Raju,

The Absolute Maximum rating for the input voltage is 35V.  If the input voltage exceeds 35V the LDO may be damaged and reliability can be affected.

Additionally it sounds like you have a line transient which is causing the input to exceed 35V temporarily.   As shown in Figure 9, the output will temporarily rise in response to a line transient.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan
