TPS27082L: Is this part appropriate for high-side swithcing of a Litium Ion Rechargeable Battery?

Part Number: TPS27082L
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS22918, , TPS22960, TPS22976

I use these switches in my boards for switching Vcc on for peripherals and am very happy with their performance.  Could I also use this switch to for a single cell LiOn battery powering a circuit.  I beleive it would work well when the circuit is a pure load.  However, what about the situation where the circuit contains a charging function and will need to reverse the current to charge the battery.

If this chip will not work, can you recommend one which will?

Thanks,

Chip

  • Hi Charles,

Because this device does not have reverse current blocking, it can pass current from VOUT to VIN. To not damage the device, it is recommended to limit reverse current through the device to when the device is on since current will flow through the FET. When the device is off, current will flow backwards through the body diode and this can damage the device since the diode is not designed for long term current flow.

On another note, have you taken a look at the TPS22918? It has the same package but integrates more features and functionality for your power switching applications.

  • Alek,

Thank you.  I have tested the switch in my circuit and it works perfectly.  I did look at the TPS22918 but was not sure whether its extra features would be relevant.  I may be interested in a part that has two integrated switches.  I am open to suggestions that reduce cost or improve reliability.

Here is what I am trying to effect.  This circuit is testing well.

    Thanks,

    Chip

  • Hi Charles,

Thanks for sharing your diagram, and glad to hear that the TPS27082L is working for your application.

As for dual channel devices, we have the TPS22960 (500mA per channel) and TPS22976 (6A per channel). Let me know if either of these solutions would work for your applicaiton. Both would offer a good space reduction and the TPS22976 even comes with over temperature protection for improved reliability.

    Thanks,
