Hello Community!

Im interested on how to properly make use of an protected usb power supply.

The device i am developing is going to be supplied by a usb port of an computer/laptop.

So far i know laptops have an 5V-500mA output.

What i actually want to do stabalize and boost my incomming voltage supply from the laptop to 5V 500mA and 3V3 500mA (i prefer more amps. but as far i've calculated i need atleast in total of 350 mA.

I've found something like the TPS61092 or TPS2500?

But then i read something about atleast 1A input?

Would i need to use of an buck/boost converter? Or can i just take the input of an laptop?

And what about surge-protection?

Can you guys help me out on how to go to the next step?

It does work at the same time,

some additional information:

I'm using an processor (stm32F3 or an Intel Curie). We're not quite sure yet wich processor we might want to use.
some logic is using 5V and some are using 3V3.
Some outputs wich require at least 65mA (relay outputs).
Logic circuit wich requires 50mA?

We prefer just one single chip ofcourse, but it's not a big deal when we use two chips.

no sure the input voltage tolerance of your USB and the acceptable voltage tolerance of the 5V logic. maybe you can use 5V input for the 5V logic and a buck converter for the 3.3V load.

What is your input voltage range? Most notebooks use 2 or 3 cell lithium batteries, which have voltages above your desired 5V and 3.3V. In this case, you need a buck like TPS62170.

Hi Chris,

Input voltage range would be 4.5 to 5.5V (USB output)
What about the TPS63000?

Ah, I think it is clear now. You want to make a 5V at 500 mA output and a 3.3V at 500 mA output powered from a USB port. As Jasper said, this is more power than the 500 mA that is provided by the USB port.

In this case, you can use 2x TPS63050 for each rail. This is much newer and higher efficiency than the TPS63000.

What would be the output current when i have an usb input? 5V 500mA.
You can boost the voltage but also possible to boost the current?

I think i might use the TPS63050 then, or the TPS63060. Are there ay footprints available (i make use of Altium Designer).

Based on the schematic (i'll replace the TPS63000), would this be an correct application?

Most devices have footprints on this link from the product folder: www.ti.com/.../pinout-quality

Power is always conserved. P = VI. So, with 5V * 500 mA coming in, you need less than that amount of power at the output. Losses (inefficiencies) reduce the available amount of output power.

In that case i could only have like 400mA at the output? :)

Whats a common way for approaching the usb bus power? i can connect circuits directly to the bus output? But what about dips etc?

Yes, that's about right on the 400mA. Your load needs to consume less power than your source can provide.

If you are driving a pulsed load, like a radio, you can store some energy in a capacitor to keep the average power consumption within the limits of your supply. The TPS62750 shows a good way to do this.
