BQ51050B: BQ51050B / Use with 20mm TX and RX coil distance

Hi,

My customer ask if BQ51050B can use with 20mm TX and RX coil distance. In this case, they don't need Qi logo and can accept lower efficiency. And also they don't need FOD function (disable). Do you have experience to support such requirement?

    A 20mm Coil to Coil distance will be very difficult for a standard Qi system. The first problem will be starting using the 175kHz digital ping, at greater distances it will not transfer enough power to start system. Once the system is started it may be possible to increase the distance but do not thing 20mm is possible.

    Thank you for your quick response. If they can modify their requirement to 15mm, then do you think they can achieve their system with Qi system?

    The Qi standard only requires 5mm coil to coil distance. Increasing the distance to 3X to 4X will introduce a lot of problem and unknowns. We have not built systems with distances greater than 5mm. I do not recommended it.

    Hi Bill,

    I also know that Qi standard recommend 5mm distance. I understand that TI tested by referring Qi standard and so customer need to check the behavior if they will use TI parts without Qi standard.
