UCC28251: UCC28251 High power inverter

Part Number: UCC28251
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28250, LM5045, PMP6712

Question is that possible to make a 3Kw DC-DC inverter push-pull 12V input on primary and 390Vdc full bridge on secondary , current at primary are in the range of 250Amps

Does the UCC28251 can be use in reverse i see the app note for 400Vin full bridge and secondary in oush-pull . And does the chip with a good current transformer can handle

the current. The excel tool for the UCC28250 doesn't like the reverse design 12Vin and 390Vout , inductor value and negative and the capacitor also.

  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for your interest in TI's products. I have asked one of our applications team to respond to your post.

  • Hi Eric

I don't think that using a push pull topology for a 3kW, 12V input will work because, as you point out the primary currents will be in the region of 250A - and at any given time only one half of the centre tapped primary will be conducting.

I would recommend a full bridge primary and at 12Vin a hard switched full bridge topology would be best. The secondary should also be a bridge rectifier to keep secondary voltage stresses as low as possible and you also get a secondary winding without a center tap - There is little to be gained in efficiency terms from using Synchronous rectification at 390Vout and Silicon Carbide diodes are probably going to be your best option here due to the lack of reverse recovery charge. Having said that - you may also like to look at some Ultra Fast Si diodes - because it's difficult to predict in advance what the balance between Vf losses and reverse recovery losses is going to be.

The main problem will be to design the transformer, switching circuits and PCB to handle the currents.

You might like to look at the TI LM5045 device. This should give you everything you need to control the power train - you can simply leave the SR drive outputs open circuit.

  • What's your proposal for a full bridge rectifier on both side primary and secondary , i can't use diode on secondary to much lost
Primary 12V,250amps separated in to leg of 1500W , secondary full bridge with mosfet in parallel on DC side for output of 190V at 3000W

Can this design be implemented like PMP6712 design with interleaved UCC28250 or 251 at high speed ?
