LP38692: Heat dissipation for 5V output, 300mA and 6.5Vin

Part Number: LP38692

Hello,

I am looking at LP38692 as an LDO for the power management of a synchronous machine motor driver application in order to regulate the isolated output of a flyback UCC...

The Vin is 6.5V, Vout 5V and current through the LDO is 300mA and therefor I need to dissipate around 0.5W.

If I use WSON package can I still dissipate that power without incurring in heat dissipation issues? Do you have any advice? Or is there any warning/lsuggestion in using WSON package in this application for this target?

Many Thanks,

FAX

  • Hi FAX,

The theta JA of this device is only 50.6 C/W for the WSON package. If you are only dissipating 0.5W you should only expect a junction temperature rise of ~25C from the ambient temperature. As long as you pay attention to heat sinking in your layout and are not operating the device at a very high ambient temperature there should not be a problem with this.

    Regards,
