BQ34Z100EVM: Step problem regarding SLUA334B

Part Number: BQ34Z100EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2002E, BQSTUDIO, BQ34Z100-G1

Hello,

I am running into a problem with Steps 6 and 7 under "When no close Qmax value is known:" on page 2.

I start step 5 and see that the QEN and VOK bits are set and start charging battery.  After charging is complete, the FC bit never sets, VOK is cleared and MaxError remains at 100%.

I am using Chem ID 6113, 2ea1900mAh NiMH cells, and a BQ2002E as a charge controller.  I see that the battery reaches full charge.

Is it possible that the trickle-charge function on the BQ2002E is causing this issue?

Thanks,

...kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

Please take a look at this thread where the poster appears to have an issue similar to yours: e2e.ti.com/.../491414

  • Hi Bryan,

Based on the thread you sent me, I saw a couple Data Flash locations I could change. Per the document "Battery Management System Notes for the bq34Z100G1 with NiMH Battery"

GG-ITcfg Load Select (change from 1 to 3)
GG-ITcfg Cell Term Volt (change from 3000 to 1900 or 950). Document wasn't sure if per cell or per pack
GG-ITcfg Cell Term V Delta (change from 200 to 100 or 1). Again, document wasn't clear

However, I can no longer change Data Flash from either the EV2300 or from my embedded setup. Device is UNSEALED. This use to work on both. What else is locking write access to Data Flash? Does the "IT ENABLE" command (QEN bit on Control-Status) do this?

  • Hi Kevin

Whenever you seal the device, there are two pairs of commands that need to be send to gain full access to the device. The unseal command and the full access command. If you check your register window, you will see that the SS flag is green, ( cleared)  meaning you have sent the unseal command, but the full access flag (FAS) is red meaning you haven't sent the full access command. The full access  default command is 0xffff, 0xffff if you didn't change it. Bqstudio has a button in the command list that allows you send command pair  just with the click of a button.

    thanks

  • Yeah Onyx,
I'm well aware of UNSEAL and FULL ACCESS modes. On one Eval board, I replaced the BQ34Z100-G1 and continuing on. On the other, I kept it as-is so far. This Eval board cannot be put into UNSEALED or FULL ACCESS. It is always SEALED no matter how many times I try. It does seem to read the voltage, current and temperature ok.

  • Hi Kevin
if the defaut codes do not work, it means you must have changed it and there is nothing we can do.
    thanks
