WEBENCH® Tools/LP38513-ADJ: TI Model Issue

Part Number: LP38513-ADJ

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

A few weeks ago I modeled a circuit using the TI Webench tools.

The model included the LP38513-ADJ 3A voltage regulator with the following parameters:

Vin = 4.5-5.5VDC

Vout = 1.1VDC

Iout = 3A

The model ran fine at the time, but today the model informs me that the junction temperature is too high for this design.

Is this the correct part for my design or is there a problem with the Webench model software?

Thanks,

John

  • Hi John,

    The reason that the model is not working is because of the power dissipation. At a vin of 5.5 and Vout of 1.1 with 3A of load current you will be dissipating 13.2W in the regulator. Unless you have an external way to dissipate this much power the regulator will not function correctly. I would recommend lowering the input voltage to 2.5V. This will greatly reduce the power dissipation and help the regulator function correctly.
