Linear Voltage Regulator IC Positivie Adjustable 1 Output, SOT-223-6

I am reviewing a older control circuit.  This circuit using the adjustable REG104GA-A.  The R1 / R2 resistors have been selected to provide an out voltage of 7V.  I did measure the actual circuit and confirmed at a Vin of 12 volta it provides an output of 7V with a 300mA load.  My question/concern is that this part data sheet states the max output of this component is 5.5 volts.  Am I missing something?  Is this a valid operatng condition?

  • Hi Robert,

Unfortunately this is not a valid operating condition. The reason for the 5.5V max output is for reliability of the regulator. As the output voltage is increased the voltage on the gate oxides can be increased as well, which will degrade the reliability of the device. There are other regulators that will take a 12 V input and provide a 7V output like the TPS7A47.

I have provided a list of parts from the parametric search that will work in this application as well www.ti.com/.../products.html

    Best Regards,
