TPS3779: ESD diode clarifications

Part Number: TPS3779
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS3780,

Hello,

My customer is considering using the TPS3779/TPS3780 in a new design. We had some questions going over the potential opportunity around the ESD diodes of the device.

Assuming that the TPS3779/80 has ESD diodes from the output to the power rails - is it safe to sink up to 2mA into the ESD diodes of the device? This would be a very rare condition that they would avoid under all normal circumstances. They do not expect the chip to work properly while current is flowing into the ESD diodes. just an understanding that this would be OK.

In addition..

Do the input pins have ESD protection diodes for preventing damage from positive-going spikes? The input pins are spec’d as 7V absolute max, as opposed to “VCC + 0.3V” absolute max, so I expect they do not have ESD diodes to the power rail.

  • Michael,

This device does have ESD protection diodes, but at no point should the pin ratings exceed the recommend operating conditions. Because the recommended output current is +- 5mA, sinking 2mA will not destroy the device.

Please let me know if this answers your questions.
