TPS62173: Higher efficiency needed

Hi all,

my customer is using the TPS62173DSGR in a typical configuration:

Vin = 12V

Vout = 5V

Iout_max = 300mA

with Lout = 2,2uH ; Cout = 22uF ; Rpg = 100K ; Cin = 10uF indicated as typical in the datasheet.

They are wondering how to increase efficiency when in stand-by mode, during this phase the device is sourcing Iout=13mA.

Do you have any recommendation on how to improve the system? If not with this device, do you suggest any other device that can achieve higher efficiency with those parameters?

Hi Adrian,

It's not clear to me: is your load 13mA minimum or this the input current? What is the maximum load needed (300 mA?)? At which load current do you want to optimize the efficiency?

Chris,

the maximum output current is 300mA.
They want to optimize the efficiency when Iout=13mA. This current at the output is seen only when their application enters standby mode.
I hope this clarifies my question.

Thanks for confirming. From the D/S, you should have about 85% efficiency there. If you don't, we need to debug that.

TPS62150A gives about 89% and TPS62147 gives about 90% at that operating point.
