LM5106: need upgrade device of this part

Part Number: LM5106
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5101A, UCC27712, TPS28225, TPS51604, LM5101B, LM5102

Hi,

my customer is using LM5106 and the drive current is small. They need at least 2A drive current, so I propose LM5101A/B, but this part is much more expensive.

1. UCC27712 peak output current is 2.8A but it does not have thermal pad, the customer wonder how it can handle such high current with SOIC package?

2. Do you have better suggestion for LM5106 upgrade.

  • Hi Howard,

thanks for reaching out! Im on gate drivers apps team and will help out.

Driver peak current does not determine gate driver power dissipation. (2.8A is the instantaneous peak current for only 100ns.)
Gate drive power dissipation calculation can be found in most datasheets,( for the UCC27712 check out section 9.2.2.7) and is based on total gate charge, operating frequency and the resistance ratio of the driver with the external gate resistor and FET internal gate resistance. As long as the total energy required by the FETs to change and discharge does not raise the Tj of the gate driver above the max, the package can handle the dissipation.

For a LM5106 upgrade, its going to be difficult to upgrade in current strength and downgrade in price however there are a few options:
    For 30V gate drivers
TPS28225/6 - SOIC however goes up to 8VDD
TPS51604 - WSON however goes up to 5.5VDD

For a small premium For 100/600V gate drivers (vs the LM5101B) there is
UCC27712 - SOIC - which you already understand is the best bet.
    LM5102 - WSON

Let me know if you are able to follow my suggestions!
    Thanks,
