TPS84A20: Require temperature derating curves for Junction temperature.

I need the temperature derating curves for Junction temperature.


The data sheet only contains Ambient temperature information.

    The junction temperature of the device will always be below the maximum rated Tj of 125C. Let me look into this with the development team and get back to you if there are any curves for junction temperature with increasing load current.

    Datasheet have temperature derating curves of junction temperature in the Typical Characteristics section, but I can not find it.

  • Hi Louis,

    I believe that reference is to the ambient temperature SOA curve in the datasheet. If you don't know already there is an existing equation to calculate junction temperature as follows: Tj = Ta + Pd * thetaJA

    • Tj = junction temperature
    • Ta = ambient temperature 
    • Pd = power dissipation
    • ThetaJA = junction to ambient thermal resistance 

    We don't have a derating curve of Tj shown since it would be more applicable to customers reading the datasheet to see the derating ambient temperature curve vs. loading current. This allows the customer to quickly understand what ambient temperature they can have operate the device at under certain loads. The SOA curve implies that at Ta = 85 degC, you can load up to the maximum without violating the 125degC operating junction temperature.
