[FAQ] TPS650830: Can TPS65083x be powered by 5V supply?

Part Number: TPS650830

Can TPS65083x be powered by 5V supply?

  • You can use a 5V supply to power the TPS65083x. You will need to add a supplemental boost or charge pump to supply the VIN and VINLDO3 with a voltage between 6V - 21V. This avoids the UVLO of the PMIC.

You may supply the VIN5VSW with the 5V input supply or supply the gate drives, (VREG1, VREG2, and VREG4), with the 5V input. For the VIN5VSW option use a voltage divider from the 5V to turn on the EN5VSW once it has reach a desired voltage such as 4.5V. If you do not supply the VIN5VSWor VREGs with a 5V source then, load on the the boost will be higher in order to supply the LDO5V loading.

The gate drives can demand up to ~250mA DC current but, peak much higher. Luckily, the input caps at the VREGs can supply the peak currents but, larger capacitance will increase the inrush current from the boost.
Therefore, it is recommended to use the EVM to test the DRV currents at your applications output voltages and currents.
