[FAQ] TPS65086: What changes should I implement on the EVM to meet my design?

What changes should I implement on the EVM to meet my design?

  • The TPS650860 EVM is designed to be a prototyping board, it will not be ideal for any solution as is. The primary things to consider when looking at a particular design are the inductors, capacitors, and FETs.

In order to get optimum performance for a known Vin / Vout / Iout combination, the inductor value can be calculated from the datasheet. The board is sized for a 6.8 x 7.3 mm inductor for the controllers and a 3.2 x 2.5 mm inductor for the converters.

Appropriate capacitance can also be determined from the datasheet based on the transient performance desired. The Vout will play a large impact here based on the derating of the capacitors.

Finally, the FETs on the board have limitations. In particular, the maximum power dissipation allowed by the CSD87381P is 4 W, so designs with high Vout and Iout may be limited by the FET on board.
