BQ2040: Charging Issue

Part Number: BQ2040

Hi.

My customer using BQ2040 until now.

They production battery pack using BQ2040 and 3S2P(5600mAH) Samsung battery (2800mAH)

The battery pack using the BQ2040 occasionally has a problem that it can not charging.

This is a symptom that can not charging when they try to charge (especially after discharging).

I attached the schematic, GG file and GUI screen shot.

Please check GG file and data flash setting.

I think data flash setting is strange.

Please let me know some debugging hint.

  • Hi SS,
Do all packs have this problem occasionally, or only some packs? If only some packs have the issue, can you compare the EEPROM settings from good packs with the bad packs to see if there is any difference?
Does the problem happen when the packs are new, or only after some time?
How long has the pack been in production and did this problem only occur on recent packs?
Thanks for giving us more background!
  • Hi dMAX.

The battery pack developed using the BQ2040 long time ago, it is used in ultrasound medical equipment.

Several types of defects occasionally occurred in the past.

Recently used in ultrasonic equipment, there are more defects.

Some packs are experiencing problems while using and EEPROM (Data flash) is same.

Defective battery packs have many different types of defects, but most of them are not recharging after discharging.

I think there is a problem with the data flash setting.

Please refer to the GG file and screen shot and let me know if there is any problem in data flash setting.

If you need more information, please let me know.

    Thanks.

  • We Hi SS,

If you change the EEPROM settings back to the original values or make them match a good pack does the problem continue?

  • Hi dMax

I tried to write the gg file used in production again, but the symptoms are still there.
The data flash (EEPROM) settings of normal or bad samples are the same.
Therefore, I did not test the EEPROM setting swap.

However, if a reset is performed, some samples will start charging, but some samples will not be started charging.
  • Hi dMax.

    Please reply me
  • Hi SS,
If the EEPROM settings are the same then the only theory I can think of is that the RAM is somehow getting corrupted. If they recover after a reset, especially a POR, then this seems most likely. Unfortunately we can't really tell what might cause RAM corruption. It could be RF energy or other high frequency energy coupling on the PCB and causing the IC to misoperate.
  • GG File is right? Is there some strange setting?
  • Hi SS,
If the GG file is the same that has been used for many years and it works, then it should be okay. You said the GG file did not change in the bad packs, so it should be a good file.
  • Can you provide BQ2040's default firmware or GG file?
  • Hi SS,
There is no default FW file because the IC uses ROM.
The GG file is stored in an external EEPROM and there are no default values since you must program the EEPROM yourself to match your battery and system.
However, Tables 10 and 11 in the datasheet show sample values for the EEPROM settings.
