BQ24090: BQ24090 is very hot when charging.

Part Number: BQ24090

hi Engineer:

Use BQ24090 to charge battery 1A.

ISET uses 540 ohm resistance.

BQ24090.The chip is very hot when charging.

Can it be used for a long time? Will it affect the life of chips?

Thanks!!!

  • Hello
The BQ24090 package has a thermal pad and this should be soldered to ground plane for cooling. The large the ground plane better the cooling.
As a linear battery charger similar to a linear regulator the power dissipation is larger with larger currents and larger input to output voltage drop.
Device has thermal regulation that will limit the output current if die temp exceeds 125C.
"Very hot" does not sound good, is the entire board heating or just the IC?
  • Hello
If you are charging at 1A with input voltage of 5V and battery voltage between 2.5V and 4.2V the regulator is dissipating 2.5W to 0.8W. The IC has thermal regulation that will reduce charging current when die temp reaches 125C, package will me much lower.
Can you measure the IC temp and board temp? Also during this test measure the input voltage, output voltage and output current.
