TPS55165Q1-EVM: ask about Working current.

Hi there.

I test with TPS55165Q1-EVM.

Here is default setting.

1. VIN : 12V

2. VOUT : 5V

I checked current consumption with no load condition.

1. IGN OFF (shutdown), No Load : current consumption near 3uA, It meet datasheet.

2. IGN ON (Normal mode), No load : current consumption up to 16mA

* I thing and under this condition is idle status then 16mA current consumption is more than high what I think.

* So I try to find current consumption of normal mode & no load condition, but I can't.

3. IGN ON (Low poer mode), No Load : current consumption near 17uA, It acceptable and meet with datasheet.

So I wonder... why normal mode operation with no load condition use around 16mA current consumption.

Dear Sir,

This is a normal behavior.

When in low power mode, it works in the skip mode, many logic circuit stop working, the operation frequency is very low, so the current consumption is low. But in normal work condition, even in no load condition, the operation frequency keeps at 2MHz unchanged, so the current consumption is much higher.

Thanks for your reply.

I agree there is current consumption difference btw normal mode and low power mode.

My question is 16mA in normal mode much higher then my think.

Or 16mA in normal mode is DCDC's spec then where can I found that? I can not find that datasheet.

Also can you provide formal document about power consumption in normal mode with no load condition?

Hi Sir,

This IC didn't gives out the no load current. But for most of the boost IC which works at the fixed frequency , the no load current is around several mA to even around 100mA. so 16mA is not a high value, actually, it is quite low considering the 2MHZ operation frequency.

Dear Helen.
I ask just one thing.
Boost IC use several mA in no load condition.
If so, buck IC don't use any current in no load condition?

Dear Sir,

The buck IC will also dissipate some current. The current value is based on the operation frequency, Vin, Vout and the Cout.
