TPS2115: Can I use external MOSFET with TPS2115?

Part Number: TPS2115
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2120, TPS2121,

Hi.

I am planning to use TPS2115 for powering device from USB with additional external power supply as option. But I need to transfer more than 1.25A that can be handle by TPS2115. Can I add external MOSFET like IRLML6401 with gate connected to STAT pin for powering with more than 2A current.

  • HI Pavel,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

We actually just launched our newest power mux devices, the TPS2121 and TPS2120. These devices can go up to 4.5A and support a higher voltage range than the TPS2115. We also have a few common application example shown in the datasheet to help configure the device.

    Would these devices work instead?

    Thanks,

    Arthur Huang

  • Hi, Arthur.

This new chips seems better than TPS2115, but because of logistic right now I prefer old one and still hope to get answer for may question in this topic.

  • Hi Pavel,

Thanks for being patient as many of us are returning from the holidays.

Can you elaborate on the setup or provide me with an application schematic? To my understanding, you'll have one path through an external FET and the other path through the TPS2115A? If so, then yes this configuration can work.

However, would it be easier to create a power mux configuration with two load switches instead? We have an app note, Power Multiplexing Using Load Switches, that provide a few examples of applications using load switches.

    Thanks,

    Arthur Huang
