TPS798-Q1: Minimum ESR Requirement

Part Number: TPS798-Q1

Hi,

I am looking into the specification of TPS798-Q1 and the output capacitor is recommended to be >1uF and <3Ohm in ESR. Is TPS798-Q1 stable as long as the effective Cout > 1uF, with no ESR zero? Thanks for your help!

Peiheng.

  • Hi Peiheng,

While every capacitor will have some ESR, ceramic capacitors have very low ESR. TPS798-Q1 is stable with ceramic output capacitors. In order to have a stable output, use any capacitor greater than 1 uF that has less than 3 Ohms of ESR. We do always recommend prototyping and performing load transient tests as described in the following Application Report to ensure that the capacitor selection meets the application specific performance expectations:

    Very Respectfully,

  • Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your prompt reply! Yes, there would be Iout transient test during customer prototyping and I confident that TPS798-Q1 would be stable with various MLCC. It would be better if a minimum ESR boundary is available for detail assessment in electric vehicle BMS application.

    Thanks for your help!
