BQ34110: Detecting shorted/open cells

Hi,

I have a couple questions about the bq34110:

1. Should multiple battery packs be tested and averaged, or is one sufficient to create a profile/golden image for one type of battery?

2. Would the bq34110 detect an open/shorted cell when dealing with several (12+) batteries?

Hi Jemma,

1. Multiple battery packs should be averaged. Please ensure there is a low variance between the values.

2. There is no open/shorted cell detection feature on this device. Voltage and current may be read from the device, but the detection would need to be performed by other circuitry/logic.

1. One should be enough.
2. Open cell can be detected, however I don't think a cell short can be detected on this gauge.

Hi Batt,

A couple follow-up questions:

1. How would an open cell be detected?
2. What happens when a battery/a battery pack is replaced?

Also, another employee answered my original post above but he contradicts your answer, I just wanted to confirm that your information is correct.

Bryan is right, there is no true open cell detection. It can be pseudo detected by a loss of power. An open cell would effectively in theory have infinite resistance and therefore would be an open circuit. However, shorting of cells cannot be detected.

If a pack is replaced, you will have to repeat a conditioning cycle.

I must have missed the conditioning cycle when I looked through the technical manual and datasheet, does it involve fully draining the new battery/battery pack then recharging it?

Hi Jemma,

This is correct. It must be near full charge (Full charge is preferred) and then drained below 7% (usually). If EDV_CMP is set to allow CEDV instead of fixed EDV, the voltage value will bounce around due to the compensation, but that value may be read in the logs.
