BQ24161: the termination current is out of normal range

Part Number: BQ24161

Hi team,

My customer is using our BQ24161 to charge a 2070mAh single cell battery. Please see the configuration as below.

When customer did the test, they use a multi-meter with waveform recording function to record the charge waveform as below. The waveform is basically correct but the termination current is 29.6mA which is out of the normal range(the termination current is set to 50mA and the accuracy is +-35%). As you can see, the charge current is 0.99A and charge voltage is 4.304V which are very close to the setting value. So I think the accuracy issue of termination current is not caused by the multi-meter error. We also tried another several charge cycles and this issue often occurs but with a different termination current value like 18mA, 80mA ,etc. Do you have any advice on this?

Best regards,

Wayne

  • Wayne,

Are there load transients on SYS that are faster than the 32ms termination deglitch time? If so, then the charger will be unable to terminate. Does the SYS voltage look like the scope shot of datasheet figure 16 shows on page 25? If so, then the charger's reverse boost protection circuit is on. It interferes with normal termination. Setting the "No Battery Operation Enable" bit to 1 disables the reverse boost protection circuit but could result in the charger's buck converter operating in reverse and boosting back to IN or USB.
