UCC28180: Single Stage CCM FLYBACK PFC + additional active clamp

Part Number: UCC28180

My query is as follows:

Can I use UCC28180 for CCM flyback PFC along with Active clamp. For driving the active clamp, I am thinking of deriving the signal 180 deg out of phase with added deadtime from the main gate drive of the said PFC controller. My application needs high secondary capacitance around 15000uF/100V and no issues with 100-120hz secondary ripple or hold up times. The load will be Audio power amplifier of total power around 1kw.

Is this doable? Any precursors/precautions/tips would be helpful.

Kanwar

  • Hello Kanwar,
There are many reason why it is not advisable to attempt to do what you propose:
    (1) A flyback pfc stage is not suitable for a 1kW power stage and will not be able to meet most requirements for the reduction input harmonics
    (2) All of the flyback pfc reference designs are DCM based.
I dont think it is possible to design a CCM flyback.
    (3) An active clamp controller is normally used in low voltage DCDC forward converter applications and it has many control and protective features that are required in the event of over and under voltages as well as over current. So generating the reset signal with all its timing requirements is only a part of your design requirements.
    (3) A faster and easier way is to use the UCC28180 as a boost pfc and a post regulator stage DC/DC converter for the 1kW

So if you have miles to go and milestones to accomplish
I recommend that you reconsider or otherwise
you will have "many miles to go before you sleep."
