UCC28780: Whether UCC28780 could be properly used in isolated DC/DC?

Part Number: UCC28780
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP10861

Dear Colleague,

Some brick power customer asked me, Whether UCC28780 could be properly used in isolated DC/DC (Such as 9-36V input)?

Why we don't give an isolated DC/DC reference design of UCC28780?

  • Hi Rock,

Thanks for reaching out. This device was primarily targeted for AC/DC applications but would also work for isolated DC/DC. That being said, keep in mind the VDD turn on threshold is 17.5V so it would not be a good fit for low voltage DC input. I would also mention that the benefit of ZVS switching is much lower with low Vin so the efficiency benefit is not as significant.

For applications looking for at least partial ZVS switching with low voltage DC input, I would say active clamp forward is much more common. PMP10861 is one example of ACForward with 9V to 36Vin isolated DC/DC.

  • Hi Ben,
    I get it!
    Thanks a lot!
