LM5085: What is the function of 'D1' schottky diode in LM5085 typical application ckt?

Part Number: LM5085

Hi,

I am not getting how D1 schottky diode is useful in LM5085 ckt? why cant we use any other diodes or zener diode over there?

Attached pic is for reference.

  • Arkaprava,

D1 is the catch diode in a non-synchronous buck converter. It is absolutely required for operation. When the high side switch Q1 turns off, the D1 diode clamps the switch node voltage at one diode drop below ground. The output current is flowing through the diode during this time. To minimize the conduction losses a Schottky diode with low forward voltage drop is used.
