TL1963AEVM: Device experiencing high heat dissipation & diagnosis needed

Part Number: TL1963AEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL1963A

Hi,

i'm testing out TL1961AEVM whereby I've switched out the KKT package device into a SOT-223 device. I'm setting the input voltage to 12V and output 10V, output loaded with 800mA. I found that the measured temperature at the top of regulator is 94.5'C at room temp, this result will failed  the spec at ambient temp 70'C. Since the dropout is just 2V and output load is around 50% of maximum (1.5A), are there any factors i need to look into to ID root cause the high heat dissipation?

Regards,

Leo

  • Hi Leo,

Application specific conditions including power dissipation, layout, proximity to other heat sources, ambient temperature, and air flow all play a role in the thermal performance of any power dissipative product.  The primary heatsink for TL1963A, like most linear regulators, is the GND plane of the PCB.  As such it is important to always have as much GND copper local to this LDO as possible.  The following Application Report discusses the impact of board layout on a linear regulator's thermal performance:

Please also note that TL1963A performs best thermally in the KTT package.  This is due to the fact that the KTT package has more direct contact to the PCB GND plane.

    Very Respectfully,
