TPS2054B: Output current

Part Number: TPS2054B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2042B, TPS2041B

Hi team,

I received following questions from my customer. Could you answer for the questions below today(your time)? Customer would like to have the answer as soon as possible. Sorry to rush you.

1. I think that the TPS2054B can drive 500mA continuous current per channel.

When the all 4 channels are used at the same time, is the device able to drive total 2A(=500mA x 4 channels)?

2. The d/s describes that the current limit is 1A(typ) per channel.

If the all 4 channels are hit current limit, the total current would be 4A(1A(typ) x 4 channels). Is the device able to handle the 4A?

3. If 800mA continuous current flowed for each channel 1 and 2, the total current will be 1.6A. Is there any problem?

Regards,

Yamaguchi

  • Hi Yamaguchi,
    1. You are right,TPS2054B can drive 500mA continuous current per channel,When you pull 500mA each channel, the total current is 2A. But the maximum continuous current is 500mA per channel.
    2. the device can work at 1A output, but it will decrease the output voltage, and it will create more heat. if all 4 channels are over current, the device will more easily to arrive the thermal shutdown point.
    3. if 800mA continuous current flowed for each channel 1 and 2, the total current indeed is 1.6A, if the maximum continuous current is bigger than 800mA, there isn't any problem.

  • Hi Kevin,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

I received the feedback from customer.  Please let me check my understanding just in case.

You mentioned that "the device can work at 1A output, but it will decrease the output voltage,~

     4. Each channel has 1A(typ) current limit  Is my understanding correct?

     5. Regarding the output voltage decreasing, is the following my understanding correct?

-Until reaching current limit : Output voltage decreasing would be Rdson x Iout.

-After the current-limit circuit has tripped : The device switches into constant-current mode. Therefore, output voltage decreasing would be Ios x Rload.

    Regards,

    Yamaguchi

  • Hi Yamaguchi,
A4: For specific current limiting values, you should refer to the corresponding datasheet. For the TPS2054B, the current limit should be 1A, you can verify it if you have EVM on hand.
    A5: Your understanding is right

  • Hi Kevin-san,

    Thank you for the answer.

Could you tell me the Ioc value for the TPS2054B?  The d/s describes only for TPS2041B/51B and TPS2042B/52B .
