BQ25890EVM-664: Setup for BQ25890EVM with LiFePO4 Single Cell

Part Number: BQ25890EVM-664
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25890, BQSTUDIO, TUSB320

Hello,

I want to build a small battery pack using the BQ25890 and was wondering about two things:

  1. How do I enter the battery chemistry parameters using the bqStudio software?
  2. How would I connect USB-C/PD charger to the evaluation board?

I have the EV2300 and got it running fine with the board and bqStudio. Sometimes the cell voltage is incorrectly read but that's about it. I think I even got it charging at some point.

Thank you!

Sascha

  • Sascha,

Regarding 1, the BQSTUDIO software for BQ25890 only needs the final battery regulation value and maximum charge current of the battery being charged. For example, for LiFePO4, VBATREG=3.6V and ICHARGEmax can get 1C or greater. The default value for the BQ25890 is 4.2V. So, I recommend using your host processor to keep /CE high until the host can write to the battery regulation I2C register. You will also need to set the input current limit in the IINDPM registers and input current clamp with a resistor at ILIM pin.

Regarding 2, the BQ25890 needs additional hardware (e.g. TUSB320) and software to communicate with a USB Type C adapter.

    Regards,
