PTH05050W: Differences between leaded and leadfree

Genius 5355 points
Part Number: PTH05050W

Hi Support,

Would need your help to check and advise on below:

 MPN: PTH05050WAS – leaded

What is the adhesive used to adhere the black plate to the lead.

And what is the function of the black plate.

MPN: PTH05050WAZ – leadfree

What is the adhesive used to adhere the metal plate to the lead.

And what is the function of the metal plate.

Thanks.

  • Hi,

    1. PTH05050WAS - leaded: The pin is sole sourced and uses a tin lead solder ball with a black color washer. The washer is made out of FR-4 PCB material with a black solder mask and is press fit onto the pin. The purpose of the washer is to prove a "Dam" type effect and hold the solder ball in place when it goes liquidus during our module assembly process.

    2. PTH05050WAZ - leadfree: The module uses a SAC alloy Pb-Free solder and is manufactured by a different supplier. The metal washer provides the same function as WAS module (stated above); it is Nickel plated and holds the solder in place during our re-flow solder assembly process.

  • Hi Alejandro,

    On PTH05050WAZ - leadfree:
Per customer's observation, they noticed that the washer of WAZ is immovable as compared to WAS module’s washer.
Apart from that, WAZ washer looks a lot thicker than WAS washer. Any reason behind this ?

    Thanks.
  • The reason you see a difference in thickness between the two washers is because they are made out of different materials and manufactured by different suppliers.

    Alejandro
  • Hi Alejandro,

In datasheet, the difference stated is only the lead finishing without any mention on the type of washer.

Any reason behind to using thicker washer on WAZ?

And is it possible to use WAZ washer on WAS component?

    Thanks.

  • Hi ikon,

The difference in thickness is because both washers are made out of different materials and manufactured by different suppliers. Both metal washers provide the same functionality.

No, it is not possible to use the WAZ washer on the WAS component.

    Alejandro
