TL783: tl783 negative voltage output application

Part Number: TL783
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM337L, LM337, LM317, LM317L

dear TI partner,

as we know ,TL783  can operate uder voltage from 1.25 to 125v, it is excellent in positive output voltage.

but my customer want to design a circuit that vin is -100v and vout is -110v by tl783,output current is about 20~30mA,can you tell me how to design the schematic.or do you have other better solution?

thank you.

  • Hi Cickey,

TL783 is a positive LDO with output range up to 125V, as you mentioned. This LDO is designed and tested for this output voltage range. If you are looking to power on a rail with a negative voltage, please consider using negative LDO.

I searched on the LDO product page; I cannot find any LDO that can support negative -100 voltages. Let me do some more research and see if we can have a solution for you.

    Regards,

  • Hi Cickey,

Devices like LM317 and LM337 are floating ground, so they only operate based on a differential. LM337L should work here with the limitation of input-output voltage differential up to 40V. There are a few application examples in the datasheet that should work for your case.

  • Dear Jason,
thank for your reply, my customer design a very strange schematic for this application by tl783,it also can output -110v, but it is not stable, i will send the schematic when i get it.
  • Dear Jason,

below is my customer's negative application schematic, please refer.

    in this application,vin is -110v, vout is -100v, vin connect to GND, vout connect to -100v,  formula is Vfef/R16=(-HV-(-HV_IN))/(R16+R21+R22)------> 1.25/180=10/Radj------>Radj=1.44k------>R22=1.44k-1.2k=0.24k;

Certainly, in fact R21 and R22 is a adjustable resistor, by adjusting the resistor,we can adjust the output voltage.

this schematic can output -100v voltage, but when we add load to 10mA, the output voltage is not stable, output voltage is about -60v~-100v,can you help check the schematic and give a better schematic?

    thank you.

  • Hi Cickey,

I can see there is a similarity between TL783 and LM317L. They both have ADJ pin. As I mentioned earlier, TL783 is tested and characterized for positive voltage while LM317L is for negative voltage. I would strongly suggest you let your customer consider using the LM317L device for negative voltage application.

Since you've provided the schematic, please allow some time for me to see if there is any issue with the current schematic. I will get back to you soon.

  • Hi Cickey,

In your schematic, C22 should be connected between -HV and -HV_IN. Can you try and see if it solves your problem?

    Regards,
    Jason
  • Dear Jason,
    Thank for your suggestion.
Ihad let my customer change the C22 connection mode.
In addition, i suggest my customer design schematic by LM317L.
    Thank four your support again

  • By the way,can you give me a reference design for LM317L ,basic requere is -110v to -100v,or 100v to -100v.
    thank you
  • Hi Cickey,

You can find more details from the datasheet: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm137.pdf

When you are picking up the right LM devcies for your application, you may find this information helpful.

    • LM3x7 – 1.5A
    • LM3x7M – 0.5A
    • LM3x7L – 0.15A

The x = 1 is positive and x=3 is negative.

  • Dear Jason,
Isee, thank for your great support,i will let my customer design the schematic according your suggestion.
    Thanks again.

    Best Regards.
