TPS63002: High Current Draw!

I have a Microcontroller circuit that can work off of 5v or 3.3v. The power supply section is using the parts in your PDF typical application schematic. I'am powering unit with 2 aa batteries. Problem is when using 63002 device I only get 3.1v out and input current is 900ma. The circuit only draws 8 ma. I can replace the TPS63002 with a TPS 63001 3.3v version and all works fine! I have my 3.3v and 12ma of current.

Any Ideas?

Hi Kevin:

How many circuits did you test? Please make sure it's not a soldering issue or equipment problem. It's recommended to use a power supply to replace the battery to reduce the influence factors.

After that, may you share:

1. The schematic and l Including the spec of the inductance.

2. Test waveform including the Vin, Vout, and L1, L2. Better with Icoil.

These information will help us to analysis the issue better.

The circuit works every time when using external power supply and fails every time when powered from 2 AA Alkaline batteries. How can I get to work with 2 AA batteries?

Hi Kevin:

Please catch the waveform during the startup and normal operating, especially for the input voltage from the batteries .

I afraid it drops a lot during loading.

Does the TPS63002 require more start up current than AA Alkaline Batteries can Deliver? Total circuit Draw is @ 20ma.

Could a larger input cap help?

Yes, you could try with a larger input cap.

Besides, I still recommend you to catch the waveform to locate the issue.
