TPS65252: Thermal behaviour when USB power is under Current Limit Protection?

Part Number: TPS65252

When the USB current limit is triggered, it seems that the TPS65252 part heats up immediately and goes into thermal shutdown eventually.

I tried this with many different values for rUSB, limiting down to 200mA.  During normal operation, it remains cool, all the way up to the current limit threshold (I tried up to 1.5A)

Is this the intended behaviour?

Also of note, the 5V for USB is being generated by the TPS65252 itself.

  • Hi, John

You can check the Figure 20 of datasheet.

When IC triggers current limit, USB_Vo will be pull low (near to 0V), then the voltage drop on USB switch will be (USB_Vin - 0V)=~5V, and the USB loading is still there, so the power dissipation will be increased and the thermal will goes up immediately.
