UCC21732-Q1: Precision concerning overcurrent protection

Part Number: UCC21732-Q1

page 23 from the latest datasheet (SLUSDH7A) it is stated:

"The overcurrent and short circuit protection feature should preferably be pairing with a split source SiC MOSFET module or split emitter IGBT module. The current mirror in the split leg of the power semiconductor can scale down the drain current or collector current. The current can be accurately measured by a precision sense resistor."

Do you know of some such SiC power module? I was not able to find any yet.

Other questions:

- The datasheet demonstrate temperature sensing with temperature sensing diodes but most existing SiC power modules implements NTC!

- Is it still worth with this part to implement 2 levels shutdown for normal operation?

many thanks!

  • Hi Romain,

Thanks for your post! I will have to check to see if there are some SiC power modules with integrated current mirror on the market.

    - Yes, you are right that most modules have an integrated NTC. You can also pair the current bias with the NTC (or PTC) to measure temperature.

    - UCC21732-Q1 utilizes 2-level turn-off in case of OC detection. The device does not operate with 2-level turn-off in the normal operation as this would increase the switching losses.
