TPS23752: Data transmission to PD if PSE fails

Part Number: TPS23752

Hello,

This may be a more general PoE question.

If the Ethernet switch supplying power were to have a failure (i.e. no longer supplying 48V), is there anything in the IEEE specification that says Ethernet data must continue to run? Another way to phrase the question is: if I loose power from the PSE am I also guaranteed to loose data transmission?

I ask because if I had a backup power supply from an adapter and the 48V from PoE were to fail, would I even be able to talk to the TPS23752 (or other PD device) being powered with the adapter now?

Thanks,
Nick

  • Hi Nick,

Technically, the data would still go through (for example, you can have a switch connected to your non-PoE laptop). The data will still go through to your laptop (can connect to the network/internet) but the PSE doesn't deliver power to the laptop.

    Regards,

    Darwin
