BQ40Z80: Check for possible implementation

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00982, , BQ4050

Hi team

My customer is taking TIDA-00982 as a basis for his design and would like to replace the gauge with BQ40Z80. He has divided his project by separating the "gauge" circuitry from the others.

He decided to insert a Lipo 24V battery in a "smart battery" compartment and the "gauge" circuitry coming out of the compartment only with the "J7" connector. Since he needs 48V to drive a robot, he intends to use two "smart batteries" in series. Can you share your thoughts about the following:

1. Is it possible to make this connection and find 48V between PACK OUT + (of the first intelligent battery) and PACK OUT- (of the second intelligent battery)?
2. Will the protection transistors fail?
3. Does he has to set any register of the BQ40Z80 (having a 6-cell battery I use this integrated instead of the bq4050 of the project)?

  • 1. No, unfortunately this gauge is not designed to be stackable. You will need a GND reference for both packs, so stacking PACK- of the higher pack with the PACK+ of the lower pack will not work.

    2. The design will not work.

    3. No registers need be set as the hw is not designed for such use.
