BQ24401: About dry cell protection

Part Number: BQ24401
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS3839

Hi,

Customer is considering bq24401.
・Battery type is Ni-MH.
・1cell / 2cell
・0.2C charge
・Vin=5V

However, bq24401 has no dry cell protection.
Could you tell me dry cell protection solution?

Best Regards,
Yusuke

  • Hi Yusuke-san,

If by "dry cell" protection you mean overdischarge protection, none of our chargers have overdischarge protection.  We expect the battery pack to have a battery protector circuit to provide overdischarge protection.  TI only has LiIon protector ICs.  I found the article below from 2001.

You would use the same concept, replacing the 2 supervisors and Q1 with TI components SVS (for example TPS3839).

  • Jeff-san,

Thank you for your support and information.

    Customers want primary cell detection.
And Customers do not want to accidentally charge alkaline cells.
Could you tell me primary cell detection solution?

    Best Regards,
    Yusuke

  • Yusuke-san,

I am not aware of a primary cell solution.  I assume that you could use a host processor and firmware and a dynamic load to perform an impedance measurement (R=V/I) but pulling current out of the battery and observing the the voltage dip.  NiMH and alkaline have different impedance.
