BQ27421-G1: What is the right steps to make a golden file for BQ27421-G1

Part Number: BQ27421-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hi team,

my customer is using BQ27GDK000EVM board and works with BQ27421YZFR-G1A fuel gauge connected externally see setup description below:

  1. the EVM (BQ27GDK000EVM ) is controlling the application F.G through I2C
  2. the battery used MNF - Varta P.N - 56427 201 020, Datasheet attached below
    1. Varta __ 56427 201 020.pdf
  3. The battery is connected to the application and then connected to the EVM -
  4. Note they are using a system-side gauge and not a pack-side gauge

Note they have removed the CPU from the application PCBs (it was disassembled)

The questions:

Could you please describe step by step how to create the golden file for the attached battery and how we using the pre-optimized golden file in the production line?

Thanks in advance and regards,

Shai

  • hi Shai.

pls see the app note below for guidiance:

    http://www.ti.com/lit/ml/sluuah7b/sluuah7b.pdf

section 6: qmax learning would be particularly useful

    thanks

    Onyx

  • Onyx,

Could you please guide/explain in more detailed the steps intended to produce the golden for system-side gauge?

Do I need to follow those steps which mentioned in the PDF “www.ti.com/.../slua903.pdf” to make the golden file?

in TI quick start guide was wrote: “Configure the gauge” - What need to configured as in the quick guide. Please elaborate for the exact values?

Where can I find the above steps in a formal document?

Assuming we performed and understood all the above, what are the exact steps need to perform further to have the golden file in the production line.
    • Is it a simple press button?
    • What would be the output file type?
    • How can it be downloaded to the F.G?
    • Should we perform the golden file upload only once during system start-up? Is it saved in a non-volatile memory?
    • Should we upload the golden file every power on (in our application the battery may be disconnected from the F.G for a few hundred mSec once in a while)

If you can answer my questions, I will appreciate it.

    Thanks and regards,

    Shai

  • HI Shai,

There is no simple press button to start learning cycle, sorry.

When learning is successful, you extract a gmfs file using bqstuido golden image plug in.

-you can program the gmfs file using the  bqstudio firmware plug in. You can also program the gmfs using your host and following the app note below:

The quick start guide has the flow chart on what needs to be store in the nvm and the sequence of programming the stored values back on the gauge. pls read it.

yes, whenever there is a power cycle you need to upload the golden file in addition to qmax and ra which will keep updating and should be stored in nvm over the life time fo the cells.

To perform a learning cycle, after configuring the e Design Capacity, Design Energy, Terminate Voltage, and Taper Rate,

charge the cells to full, rest for 2 hours, discharge to empty using c/7 rate, rest 5 hourss, charge to full, rest 2 hours and dishcarge to empty and rest 5 hours.

If qmax_up and res_up flags gets set, then learning was successful and the pack can be used

    thanks

    Onyx

  • Onyx,

    Thanks for your details answer.
