LM3401: LM3401 D = Vout-Vdiode what is Vdiode?

Part Number: LM3401

Is the Vdiode in the data sheet talking about the total forward voltage of a string of LED's?

It is not defined in the data sheet.

  • Vdiode is the forward voltage of the recirculating diode in the buck converter.  Typical values are between 500 and 700mV for most Schottky diodes.  This does vary with temperature.  In general, if the output voltage is reasonably high, you can ignore including the diode in your equations.
