BQ4050: Gas gauge calibration issue

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00982, BQ24600, , BQSTUDIO, EV2400

Hi all,

We designed a board that looks like tida-00982.

It is based on bq4050 gauge and bq24600 charger.

We use a 2S battery pack with the following characteristics:

   - Design capacity: 3000 mAh.

   - Design voltage: 7.4 V.

We use bqStudio and EV2400 to setup the bq4050. So we follow the video https://training.ti.com/bq40z50-setup-and-going-production.

We set:

   - DA Configuration.

   - FET Options.

   - Temperature Enable.

   - Temperature Mode.

   - Enabled Protections A.

   - Enabled Protections B.

As follows:

   - CUV.

   - COV.

   - ASCC.

   - ASCD.

As follows:

   - Power.

   - Shutdown.

As follows:

   - Low Temp Charging.

   - Standard Temp Charging.

   - High Temp Charging.

   - Rec Temp Charging.

As follows:

   - Design.

   - TD.

As follows:

When we rich the calibration step, we measure the Cell-1 voltage (3950 mV). And in calibration tab, we check "Calibration Voltage" and press on the "Calibrate Gas Gauge" button.

The result is an error message "Calibration - Cell 1 measured voltage in millivolts is out of range".

Is there any missing setting or configuration ?

Thanks.

  • Hi Ron,

If you have used the reference design, then the values in the default config should match. Please check if your calibration cell gain etc are 1.xxxx in values and not 10.xxx. Please also set calibration voltage at 4000mV before performing calibration.

  • Hi Batt,

    Thank you for your reply.

Current Calibration, Temperature Calibration, Battery Voltage Calibration and Pack Voltage Calibration are all done with success.

    Only Cell-1 Voltage Calibration Failed.

The Calibration Flash Data are as follow:

And I set the calibration Voltage - Applied Cell 1 voltage to 4000 mV. I check "Calibrate Voltage" checkbox and click "Calibrate Gas Gauge" button.

I obtained the same error "Calibration - Cell 1 measured Voltage in millivolts is out of range".

The read registers are as follow:

What can be the issue ?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Rob,

Please check if your actual measured voltage across cell 1 is 4000mV. It doesn't seem likely. However, if you changed any components, I see that your sense resistor is also 12mOhm and not 1mOhm, that can cause issues.
