LP5012: State of output pins before MCU can configure the output?

Part Number: LP5012

Team,

-I assume that the open-drain/open-collector outputs (of OUTx pins) are not driven (ie output stage stays tri-stated) as long as the MCU has done the INITIALIZATION (see fig. 15 of SLVSEH2A). Correct?
Is it only in the NORMAL mode that the output stage will start to be driven (when Chip_EN is set to 1). correct?

-Are the open/drain/open-collector output (for OUTx) fail-safe by nature? or is a protection needed?
For example: If the LP50xx is kept in SHUTDOWN mode (as MCU does not communicate with it on the I2C bus for a prolonged time) and the OUTx pins are tied up to the supply.
Is it an issue? Could it reduce the life time of the output driver?

Thanks in advance,

A.

  • Hi Anber,

Yes the output pins are shutdown until Chip_EN and brightness/color registers are set. Output pins could be biased no more than 6V, which you could see in datasheet section 7.1 absolute rating. So it is OK if you connect them to power supply (assuming you are using 2.7~5.5V as recommended).
