Universal AC Input and 5 V DC Output

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28704, UCC28704EVM-724, UCC28700, PMP10937

Hello,

I am trying to find a TI chip which can take (maybe rectified) AC input and give a 5V (or 3.3V) DC output.
Please help.

Thanks,
Shiv A.

You do not list a power level, so I assume that the power level you need is less than 25W.

Our primary side regulated flyback controller UCC28704 will meet your requirement.  This device is designed to convert universal AC input to an isolated low voltage DC output, such as 5V.  Our EVM UCC28704EVM-724 supports an 85-265VAC input with an isolated 5V/2A output.

  • Thank you Eric. I am trying to keep BOM and size to the minimum.

Would you have recommendation for (maybe a non isolated) DC output where I would not need so many passives and certainly not a transformer.

    Thanks,
    Shiv A.

Typically for AC/DC conversion, where the input voltage is so high, isolation is required to protect the user from electrical shock.  A flyback converter with UCC28704 is able to meet this while maintaining efficiency that meets stringent regulatory requirements while keeping external components to a minimum.

If you do not need electrical isolation (since there is no exposed conductor that's accessible to a user) and you are looking for lowest solution cost possible then an offline buck with the same device would be our recommendation.  PMP10937 is a good example of this with UCC28700, which is a previous generation of UCC28704.

  • Thank you Eric.

Where can I buy PMP10937? (chip and EVM).

Checked Mouser, Digikey, TI but nothing.

PMP10937 is a reference design, it is not available for purchase.  You can use the files in "Design files" to build the design yourself if you would like to test it.

  • Thank you Eric.
