TPS59641: Questions Related to TPS59641 V5DRV pin

Part Number: TPS59641
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS51604

Hi Team,

We've DIN TPS59641 in our customer, but we met some question with the schematic design. Could you please give some comments on the following questions?

1. Our customer do the design refer to the typical application Figure 56 in the datasheet. And the'd like to know the function of R9, which I high light in the figure below. Since the voltage of V5DRV is down below spec during test, they replace the 10ohm R9 with 2.2ohm resistor, wii this cause any problem?

2. They also use our FET driver TPS51604, please refer to the schematic below. Is it ok if we connect V5DRV to TPS51604 VDD pin? Could the pin connect to +V5SB?

Thanks.

Best Regards,

Livia Liu

  • Hello,

1- R9 is used to create a low pass filter with C10, to filter switching spikes from the driver VDD as seen by the controller. It  should be OK to replace it with 2.2 ohm

2- Yes, you can connect 5V supply to the TPS51604 VDD pin. The TPS59641 uses V5DRV as the supply for the gate drivers, so whatever supply you connect should be capable to supply enough current for switching the MOSFETs. I would recommend to use the same supply for V5DRV and TPS51604 VDD to avoid cases where one is powered and the other is not. Neither controller or driver has a way to detect when the other is not "alive."

  • Hi Matt,

    Understood.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
