TPS54519: Schematic Review Request for EVM

Hi Team,

I am designing a reference EVM for a high-speed retimer board and would like to use the TPS54519 because of its efficiency in sourcing up to 5A. I have two versions of the board that will both take VIN = 3.3V, but one version will require that the regulator output 2.5V, while the other version requires a regulator output of 1.2V. I have implemented a 3-pin shunt header that will have a noticeable silkscreen message to inform the user how to set the shunt headers.

Can you help review the schematic and let me know if anything is missing? I used the TPS54519EVM as a reference.

One additional question I have is whether there are any smaller size inductors that you would also recommend aside from the Coilcraft one?

Hi Michael,

The schematic diagram seems good.

Would it be easier to put the option to change the Vout on the lower side of the VSNS resistor divider? With fixed upper resistor divider, it makes the layout (shorter trace loop between Vout and VSNS) and compensation calculation less complex. Refer to Compensation section of the datasheet (page 23 and 24).

Thanks for the response!

We are still flexible with layout so it should be no problem to move the option to the lower side of VSNS.

Any comments on the possibility of a smaller size inductor? I’m hoping to minimize the collective PCB footprint of the regulator solution.

Hi Michael,

There are two possible options to reduce the inductor size, increase the switching frequency or look for an inductor with reduce Isat (> 8.0A, current limit threshold max). Increasing the switching will lower efficiency due to higher switching losses.

Hi Excel,

Thanks for the thoughts. For now, I'll hold onto the Coilcraft recommendation, as I like the high saturation current rating for this inductor. We'll weigh the trade-offs you mentioned if real-estate on the PCB becomes an unavoidable issue.
