UCC28911: TRADEOFFS, PROS & CONS OF CONTROLLER (EXTERNAL SWITCH) & CONVERTER (INTEGRATED SWITCH)

Part Number: UCC28911
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28881, UCC28742, UCC28722, UCC28700

Hello,

One of the options for consideration when using the WEBENCH Designer is to choose between External Switch or Integrated Switch.

I'll like to know what the tradeoffs, pros and cons are. I'm designing an LED Driver.

Thank you and regards

Uwana

Since you selected UCC28911 as the device number I am assuming you are looking for an LED driver that has an AC input voltage that is similar to 90-305VAC.  If this is not the case please let me know since the recommendations below don't all apply.

The decision to select an integrated or external switch usually depends on system level requirements and preference of the designer.  Below are some common benefits that have been highlighted to us for each option

    Integrated FET

    • Easier to design with since fewer components
    • Example device: UCC28881, UCC28911

    External FET

    • More design flexibility for optimization on voltage and current rating
    • Able to adjust gate drive strength to optimize between EMI performance and efficiency
    • Example device: UCC28700, UCC28722, UCC28742

    Best Regards,

    Eric
