UCC28810: Transformer design

Part Number: UCC28810
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92314

I was designing  led drivers of 54,1200ma and 36v,1200ma. So iwas stuck at how to select cores or these. and next is how to get number of turns in primary and secondary. Please help

  • Hello Mohitha,

Thank you for your interest in the UCC28810 LED power controller.

The UCC28810 datasheet applications section is vague magnetics design, but an application note ( ) has some information.  Even that is not enough, but at the end of the app-note is a reference to a TPS92314 controller and its datasheet ( an application section which has more transformer design information starting on page 14.

I suggest to use the TPS92314 transformer design procedure using the input and output parameters applicable to your project to determine the primary inductance and turns-ratio. The transformer core size depends on the level of power through-put (energy per cycle) that it must handle. A ferrite core manufacturers application notes should be able to guide you to the select the proper core size and material and to determine the actual number of primary turns needed to avoid saturation and to minimize the core loss.  From the primary turns and turns-ratio, you can get the secondary turns needed.

Without favoritism, but mainly from long familiarity, I find that the Ferroxcube Soft Ferrites and Accessories 2013 data handbook to have useful graphs to find the right core size. This product catalog can be downloaded from their website.
