BQ40Z80: Programming method

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00982, MSP-EXP430F5529LP,

I inserted this component in my form to create a "smart battery" taking example from the "TIDA-00982" project using only the 'Gauge' section.

I wanted to make a LiPo 6S battery smart, but do I have to program it before connecting it to my card?

Can I do this using the MSP-EXP430F5529LP kit? If possible, do I just need to connect my card to SMBus?

Thanks so much
