TPS61240: Output Current under short condition

Hi Experts,

We are doing an output short test. When shorted voltage output to GND, the output current continues to flow about 80mA.

VIN : 3.3V

VOUT : 5V

Is this a expected behavior?

May I know how customer implement the output short test and how do they measure the output current 80mA?

Hi Zack,

We shorted it shown in yellow and measured output current at the point of circle in red .

Hi Uchikoshi-san,

Just want to confirm it with you are talking about the boost converter TPS61240, not the TPS62141.

TPS61240 input voltage range is 2.3V to 5.5V, cannot handle 24V Vin.

I am so sorry. Yes, I am talking about TPS61240. Input voltage is 3.3V. Sorry for confusing you.

Hi Uchikoshi-san,

That's normal behavior. During short circuit condition, the device is still switching, delivering current to output.

Hi Uchikoshi,

Sorry. What you found under TPS61240 short circuit condition is the expected behavior.

Under short circuit condition, the device stops switching and consumes around 90mA current from input.

When Vout=0V, the device is in startup precharge phase, the current limit is related to the output voltage level, it is 90mA typical at Vout=0V condition.

Hi Uchikoshi,

Yes. During short circuit condition, the device is not switching.
