TPS40210EVM: Possibility to damage from open gate driver

When TPS40210EVM GDRV pin open(NC), is it possibility to damage?

(= Removed R9 resistor)

I think that in this condition become high duty GDRV and damage, is it correct?

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hi Satoshi,

Thank you for your interests in the TPS40210.  When R9 is removed, the GDRV pin should not be damaged.  However, your MOSFET gate becomes open, which can be induced to turn on when you apply input voltage, then get damage to the MOSFET because once it is on (uncontrollable), you basically create a short circuit path from the input to ground, through the inductor and the MOSFET.  To mitigate such failure, you can add a 10k to 100k resistor across the MOSFET gate and source.

    Thanks,
